This is a
very deceptive, medium speed, long pimples rubber. The pimples are skinny, very
flexible and have a lot of grip. This allows you to put a lot of variation on
returns. This is essential at the higher levels of competition, as simple spin
reversal will no longer fool your opponent.
Blocking
against topspin is good, although some minor adjustment need to be made for high
spin loops (because of the extra grip). It produces a low flat ball, hard
to attack again.
Hitting
against chop is easy and consistent, and produces decent spin reversal. Chopping
against chop can be kept low as long as a full stroke is made.
Choppers
will find the 979 offer exceptional control mid-distance against loops, with good spin reversal. By changing the angle of your chopping
strokes, a variety of spin including sidespin, chop and no-spin can be produced
with ease against loops, drawing errors from your opponent.
The best
thing this rubber offer is variation. Against return of serve, by changing the
stroke and angle slightly, a lot of variation of spin is returned, consistently
drawing errors from the opponent.
Because of
the unusual amount of grip the 979 has, I found I could even loop with the
rubber, although it take a bit of effort. Hitting also worked surprisingly well.
Alex...
Globe 979 0.6mm: Only three words to describe it,
SUPERB, SUPERB AND SUPERB.
The globe 979, it is a amazing rubber. I
particularly like its slighly 'dead' feel and boy... it is very very
deceptive. Now I know how to vary the stroke to create different spin...and it
can make wobbly ball easily.
I played with players whom I'd also played with
the 804 before. Unlike their opinion on the 804, -this time their
opinion,..."the globe is a hard rubber to play against".. they say
the ball floats with unpredictable degree of spin which make them
hesitate to fully attack the ball !!!. Attacking backspin is easy. Push
and block send very deep sinking ball on heavy topspin and easy to do it thanks
to its dead feel sponge and grippy pips, -the return is mostly inside the
table, makes the 2nd attack very unlikely.
The only weakness I experience with the globe is
that it's a bit lack of directional stability, sometimes it can send the
ball to -"close but not really exactly where you want it to be".
Overall, it's a better longpips than the dhs
fog&cloud. Not that the dhs is bad, it's just that the globe has the edge
when it comes to the serious longpips game. it may be lack of the dhs' quality
control, but it serves the purpose better,.. give me the globe anytime.
