Where to buy?
For competition level tables, it's worth going through your local club or
dealer. For the home, a competition level table is usually not worth it... as
the location and surrounding are usually not ideal, and often restricted
already... Once you've decided what you want, buying
online usually gets you a cheaper price, or at least as cheap, with often some
specials or extras thrown in as well. The description and details of what's
included can be studied from the convenience of your home, instead of trying to
read it from the box in the store, or asking an un-informed sales person. When
buying online the shipping is usually already organised and quoted, instead of
trying to organise it in the store. With tables it's well worth getting it
delivered, as the chance of getting it damaged are significant. It's worth
getting the net and posts at the same time too, which is sometimes included
already anyway.
When it come to bats, if you want
anything decent, it's well worth buying this seperately. The stores that carry
the recreational tables tend to only stock the recreational range of pre-made
(factory assembled) bats, which are often more expensive and far inferior to a
custom made bats, and can be bought for similar price.... see out article on

something suitable. In Australia, luckily some of the
larger sports stores have started to carry some of the more decent recreational
tables, that are a lot better than your standard department stores specials.
Stores such as Rebel Sport (see link below), are now carrying the German made
"Spirit Roller" which has a 16mm MDF surface (which should be perfectly adequate
for most homes), is quite durable, can easily be put away with the roller, and
comes with a net set included. They also carry the "Stiga Family outdoor", which
is a far less common table that is robust enough and suitable to be used and
kept outdoors. Stores like Rebel charge around AUD$50 to get a table delivered
to your doorstep within days, well worth it considering the effort and risk when
